What a social share preview shows
When someone pastes your link into a post or a chat, the platform builds a small card from tags in your page. The card holds an image, a title, a short description and your domain. A good card gets clicked, and a broken one gets scrolled past.
Each platform draws the card its own way and cuts long text at its own length. This social share preview shows all five side by side, so you can fix a title that gets cut or an image that is missing before the link goes out.
How to use the preview
Type or paste the details of your page. The cards and the tags update as you go.
- Enter the title and description the way you want them to read.
- Add the full address of your share image. It must start with https://.
- Add the page address and the site name. An X handle is optional.
- Read the warnings. Red ones will break or hide the card, and the rest are advice.
- Press Copy the tags and paste them into the head of your page.
Meta tags that make the card
The generator writes Open Graph tags, which start with og:, and the twitter: tags that X reads. Open Graph is used by LinkedIn, Facebook and Slack as well, and iMessage reads it too. If you write the og: tags well, every platform works, and the twitter: tags only add control over how X draws the card.
A share image about 1200 by 630 pixels works everywhere. Use a JPG or PNG, because some platforms do not show SVG or WebP.
Limits of the preview
The cards are an approximation. Platforms change their layouts and cut-off lengths without notice, so treat the numbers as a guide. The preview does not fetch your page. It draws what you type, and your own browser loads the image. Platforms also keep an old copy of a card, so after you change a live page you may need to refresh it in the platform's own debugger.
Frequently asked questions
Does this social share preview read my live page?
No. It draws the card from what you type and never fetches your page. That keeps your text private and works for pages you have not published yet.
Why does my image not appear?
The address must be a full https:// link to a JPG or PNG that anyone can open. A relative path, an http:// address or an SVG file is usually refused.
What image size should I use?
About 1200 by 630 pixels, in a ratio near 1.91 to 1. It fills the large card on X, LinkedIn, Facebook and Slack, and it looks right on iMessage.
Do I need both og: and twitter: tags?
The og: tags cover most platforms, and X falls back to them. The twitter: tags let you choose the card type and name your account, so the generator writes both.
Why does the old card still show after I fixed my tags?
Platforms store a copy of each card. Use the platform's own sharing debugger to refresh it, or wait for the cache to expire.
