UTM link builder

Add UTM tags to any web address in seconds. The builder encodes every value, warns you about the mistakes that quietly split your reports, and keeps your favourite tags as presets. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What a UTM link builder does

A UTM link builder adds tracking tags to the end of a web address. The tags tell your analytics tool where a visit came from: which source sent it, through which medium, and as part of which campaign. Without them, a click from your newsletter often lands in a bucket called direct, and you never learn what worked.

This UTM link builder takes the address and up to five tags, joins them correctly and hands you one link to copy. It also checks your entries as you type, because a link with a small slip in it still works, and that is the problem. Nothing breaks. Your reports just fill up with near-duplicates that are hard to merge later.

How to use the builder

Paste the page you want people to land on, then fill in the tags. Source, medium and campaign are the three that matter most. Term and content are optional and help when you run paid search or test two versions of a link.

The mistakes the builder warns about

Capital letters come first. Analytics tools treat Email and email as two separate values, so one campaign can show up as two rows. Keep every tag lowercase. Spaces are next. The builder encodes them as %20 so the link works, but a hyphen or an underscore is easier to read and to filter on.

It also tells you when source or medium is missing, because a link without them cannot be sorted into a channel. If your address already has a query string, the tags are added after it. If it has a fragment, the part that starts with a hash mark, the tags are placed before it, which is where browsers expect them. Tags already on the address are replaced, and the builder says so.

Presets and privacy

A preset saves your source, medium, campaign, term and content under a name, so a weekly newsletter takes seconds to tag. Presets are kept in your own browser. They are never uploaded, and clearing your site data removes them. If your browser blocks local storage, the builder still works and tells you that presets cannot be saved.

Agree your naming rules with your team before you start. A short shared list of sources and mediums matters more than any tool, because the report is only as tidy as the weakest link someone shared.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

They are short tags added to a web address after a question mark: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content. Analytics tools read them when someone clicks the link and file the visit under the source, medium and campaign you chose.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Analytics tools only need a source to record a campaign visit, but source, medium and campaign together give you a report you can read. Term and content are optional extras for paid keywords and for telling similar links apart.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes. Reports treat Newsletter and newsletter as different values, so mixed case splits one campaign into several rows. Pick lowercase, use hyphens instead of spaces, and keep a shared list of names.

Can I use UTM tags on links inside my own website?

Avoid it. A UTM tag on an internal link starts a new session and overwrites the real source of the visit. Use UTM tags only on links that bring people to your site from outside.

Is the link I build sent anywhere?

No. The builder runs in your browser. The address and tags you type are never uploaded or logged, and saved presets stay in your own browser storage.
